LED Lighting for Schools: Why It Is Essential for Well-being, Safety, and Learning

1. An environment that supports study

School LED lighting is not just about seeing better: the color, intensity, and quality of light affect concentration, circadian rhythm, and learning ability. Well-lit classrooms improve attention, reduce eye strain, and create a calmer mental environment for both students and teachers.

2. Key standards: beyond UNI 10840 and UNI EN 12464-1

LED Italy refers to UNI 10840 (2007) for general criteria and UNI EN 12464-1 for lighting levels.
A key aspect concerns classroom lux, that is, light intensity: UNI EN 12464-1 indicates values between 300 and 500 lux, depending on the students’ age and teaching activities.
For nurseries and kindergartens, levels are set at 300 lux, with LED UGR below 19 and a minimum LED CRI of 80.

3. The role of LEDs: efficiency, durability, well-being

Compared to traditional lamps, LEDs:

  • consume up to 80% less,
  • last up to 10 times longer,
  • require less maintenance, avoiding lesson interruptions.

In addition, a neutral light temperature (4000–5000 K) stimulates attention and fosters an environment similar to natural light, improving student performance in terms of concentration and productivity.

4. Classroom lighting strategies

  • Uniform distribution to avoid shadow zones.
  • School LED CRI ≥ 80 to ensure realistic colors and better reading and writing activities.
  • LED UGR < 19 to reduce glare and protect eyesight.
  • Dimmable lighting to adapt to lessons, projections, and group work.

These parameters ensure that light is not only functional, but a true support to learning.

5. Reference to natural light

LED Italy highlights the importance of color temperature similar to daylight.
An additional step forward is circadian lighting for schools, i.e., systems that adjust light throughout the day to follow students’ biological rhythms. This approach helps maintain high attention levels and reduces mental fatigue.

6. Different areas, different needs

Not only classrooms: hallways, entrances, cafeterias, gyms, and laboratories also require tailor-made LED school lighting.

  • In hallways: uniform light and motion sensors.
  • In laboratories: adjustable lighting for screens and instruments.
  • In gyms: diffuse, anti-glare light for safety during sports activities.

7. Tangible effects on learning and performance

Studies show that high-quality LED school lighting improves student performance: faster reading, fewer errors, and greater productivity.
This confirms that LEDs not only save energy, but also act as a strategic lever for the quality of the school environment.
