Underwater lights for swimming pools: which ones to buy

Pool lighting is a factor that should not be underestimated when designing a new pool or renovating an existing one.

The kind of atmosphere you want: intimate, animating parties and summer evenings with friends or generating fascinating water and garden effects.

Besides the aesthetic aspect, pool lighting is also a question of safety.

Adequate lighting, highlighting the position of the tank and signalling its presence, can avoid unpleasant accidents.

You cannot even imagine the wide range of options available for pool lighting.

In this article, we will cover the most common types, with the aim of helping you make an informed decision on the most suitable solution for your needs.

LED or halogen swimming pool lighting?

Replacing old halogen pool lights with modern LED underwater lights is much easier than it may seem!

The brilliant colours create a spectacular underwater effect, which you can customise with a simple click of the remote control.

LED lights for swimming pools are significantly more energy-efficient than the old halogen lights.

In fact, these lights save up to 80 per cent energy compared to old halogen lights, a considerable reduction that pool owners will appreciate in their energy bills.

Although halogen lights are still used, they are losing favour to modern LED options.

Old halogen lights can cost up to $1 a day if used daily, without having the same brightness or effect as LED lights.

Halogen lights have a much more limited service life due to the degradation of the rubber O-ring around the light and the need to replace it.

When water enters the light chamber, it blows the fuse, which can cost several euros to replace.

Underwater pool lights are available in a wide range of colours that you can easily change at the flick of a switch or by choosing pre-programmed settings.

These lights are three to five times more energy efficient than old halogen lights and produce about 90 per cent less heat.

Furthermore, they have an average life of about 50,000 hours, compared to about 5,000 hours for the old halogen lights.

Halogen pool lights are less expensive than LED lights, but the advantages of LED pool lights are seen over time.
